Weaving together the past and the present; Waqfa becomes a symbol of resilience and unity inspired by the people of the Emirates coming together through this difficult period. We were driven to reimagine and create a moment in time for the people to reflect and contemplate as they meander through the pavilion. Waqfa was formally created through embracing modularity and symbolizing people from diverse backgrounds coming together to take a stand, share their reflections of the past, and embrace the present.
The design strives to form a juxtaposition between the native stereotomic element s and the tectonic grid, creating a spatial condition that invokes a sense of timelessness. Moreover, the courtyards mimic some regions of the UAE and its urban landscape while the wooden structure creates a grid that filters light through. The inclusion of recycled, reused and found materials in the pavilion allow it to be more eco-friendly. With that, Waqfa becomes not only a space of reflection, but also one that can spark tactile curiosity and allow its user to embrace the state of being and the unknown
